5 out of 5 stars Better than Kodak Zi6   January 1, 2009
2 out of 3 found this review helpful

Pros:
- Small & Light: The Vado HD is SIGNIFICANTLY SMALLER & LIGHTER than the Zi6. If you actually want to put your pocket video camera in your pocket the Vado HD is for you.

- Great Controls: The controls are VASTLY superior to the Zi6's. Simple, well spaced buttons are always better than a 4-way joystick.

- Good Audio: Doesn't pick up nearly as much background noise as the Zi6 (which is a good thing).

- Good Video: The Zi6 is essentially unusable in low light conditions. While no video camera in this category is going to blow you away with its low light performance, at least the Vado HD produces smooth, if noisy video, as opposed to the Zi6's choppy video. In well lit situations they are about the same.

- Lithium Ion Battery: The battery is smaller, lighter, and more convenient to recharge than the NiMH AA batteries the Zi6 uses.

- Large Storage Capacity: 8GB built-in storage provides at least 2hrs of recording.

- Wide Angle Lens: The Vado HD's lens is significantly wider angle. For me this is an advantage because I will mostly be shooting things relatively close to me. The wider field of view also makes it easier to reduce camera shake than with the Zi6.

- HDMI Connection: The one cable HDMI video connection is insanely better than the 5 cable AV/Component video solution that Kodak used.

Cons:
- Layout of USB Connector makes using a full size tripod impossible

Another big advantage of the Vado HD is that while it does make noises when you turn it on and off, these sounds are barely audible and not nearly as loud and annoying as the Zi6's corresponding noises. To sum up I really like the Vado HD and am very happy I switched from the Kodak Zi6.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Pocket Camcorder   December 29, 2008
3 out of 4 found this review helpful

Creative Labs Vado HD 720 Pocket Video Camcorder brings back many of the same features of the original Vado with a couple of modifications. Instead of a recessed lens the newer version extends out from the body. With a slight weight increase over the older model it is also a tad thicker. The microphone is now shifted to the other side of the lens. Creative Labs includes a protective muted white colored silicone skin to cover the black bodied Vado HD 720.

One of the Vado's key features is a mini HDMI connector for outputting 1080i video to HDTV along with a standard composite AV output. Creative also bundles an HDMI cable. It is not a composite cable. Packed with 8GB of built-in memory it allows for the storage of up to 2 hours HD video. Mimicking a thumb drive, this model offers a flip out USB connector. It captures H.264 encoded videos at 30 frames per second with a 1,280x720 CMOS sensor, and saves them as AVI instead of MPEG-4. 640x480 VGA video is also an option. The threaded tripod mount is a nice addition. The battery is removable and recharges via USB. Battery life is averaging almost 2 hours. A glaring omission is a flash memory slot.

Upon connecting to Windows PC, the software automatically pops up and offers the options of playing videos or uploading to YouTube or Photobucket. As with most electronic products, plug-in installation is required. The software is very basic and not loaded with many editing features.

Buyers should keep in mind that the Vado HD 720 is not a true HD video camcorder but a POCKET video camcorder. Like its competition, the unit offers a low-resolution sensor with a miniature fixed lens. Given that, while fine tuning exposure is not an option, contrast is surprisingly good. The key is that one will be able to view videos full screen via HDTV or computer monitor. For that purpose alone, the Vado HD 720p gets high marks over the competition.

One thing to keep in mind is that the folks at Creative Labs/LogiTech have a poor track record in providing quality customer care. Sadly, product support is hit and miss at best. I strongly recommend backing up this purchase with a good extended warranty. Surprisingly, the gurus at Creative Labs actually thought about the consumer this time and indeed put some effort in this product. The Vado HD720p goes the distance.

5 out of 5 stars I Made A Side By Side Comparison ..Vado HD and Flip Mino HD   December 29, 2008
2 out of 6 found this review helpful

Had I merely purchased the Flip Mino HD, I would have been happy, never knowing what I would have missed by not buying the Creative Vado HD..
For two evenings I had both cameras in hand so that I could see if I could come to a definitive decision as to which of these two very comprable cameras I would prefer.
Yes..everyone has subjective needs...so...
For two groups the Flip Mino HD would seem to be the preferable unit.

If you are a Mac user, it seems that from what I have read from other's experiences, the Flip Mino HD has the more user friendly software.

If you USUALLY use the camera in very very low light situations (by that I mean SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER light levels than you would find in a indoor living room at night lit be a few lamps)..then the Flip Mino HD might be better for you.

If you usually use the camera in outdoor settings and in typical night indoor settings with average light bulb illumination, the Vado HD would be the better choice. Why?

In typical outdoor and indoor situations the Vado HD produces sharper images with notably less noise than the Filp Mino HD does. The difference is notable.

One thing that is surely personal prefernce is that the Flip Mino HD produces slightly warmer images and the Vado HD slightly cooler images.
The differences are NOT major and sometimes very slight.

The other differences in battery changing ability and twice the memory size, twice the video time, larger LCD..are in favor of the Vado HD and are icing on the cake.

I finally tried both the HD+ and HD settings on the Vado HD, and found some (not great)loss in detail when using the HD mode (which gives you 4 hours instead of 2 hours recording time).

I noted that the Flip Mino HD has a 90 day warranty while the Creative Vado HD has a full year warranty with a $29.99 option to extend the warranty to two years.

The wider angle of coverage with the Vado HD vs. the narrower angle of coverage of the Flip Mino HD is significant. Which you prefer is subjective.

If your computer's CPU is not fast enough to process HD+ files, you can use the HD setting on the Vado HD.
If your CPU is not fast enough to process the Flip Mino HD files, you have no option.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Product!   December 28, 2008

As soon as I got my new Creative Vado HD on Christmas Day, I charged it up, and I have been playing with it ever since. I am impressed! Before I decided on the Vado HD, I did a lot of research. I saw the MinoHD a few weeks ago and almost decided on that one, but then I heard about the Vado HD. The Vado HD had quite a few improvements over the MinoHD that I was very interested in. It has double the capacity (2 hours), it has a user replaceable battery, it has a larger screen, and can play the files in HD directly on an HDTV with the included HDMI cable. The 2 hour capacity was all I needed to pick the Vado HD over the MinoHD, and the other improvements were just icing on the cake. The video quality is excellent on the Vado HD and beats my MiniDV camcorder that I payed over $600 for a few years ago. I knew I wasn't going to get Blu-ray quality or anything like that, but the quality was better than I expected. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of other HD camcorders, but most other HD camcorders don't have a $200 price tag. For a pocket-friendly camera that still gives great quality and plenty of space, the Vado HD is the best bang for my buck.

5 out of 5 stars Works as advertised   December 27, 2008

I gave this to my wife as a Christmas present so I couldn't use it till the 24th, it does not come with a lot of instructions, but you don't need them you turn it on and press the record button, it's that simple, I don't know what probs other people are having with attaching it to the computer and installing the vado software, but that was easy as well. This thing takes great video and the sound is pretty good. The best part is putting it on my 61 dlp and seeing it full screen. Maybe their computers don't have the minimum specs, but this thing rocks and feels pretty sturdy. Awesome.
